Novak Djokovic: Exceptional Athlete from Serbia

Novak Djokovic is without a doubt one of the biggest tennis stars of his generation, if not of all time. The exceptional player from Serbia won all four Grand Slam tournaments, most of them several times, and stood on top of the ATP ranking for countless weeks. Besides that, Djokovic always entertains the crowd with some fun on and off the court but this emotional side of him also produces negative headlines every now and then. One thing is for sure though: when “Nole”, as his fans call him, is around, it never gets boring. First and foremost, because of his numerous achievements.

Away from Home Early: First Career Steps for “Nole”

Novak Djokovic grew up with his parents and two younger brothers in the Serbian capital of Belgrade, where he tried tennis at the age of four. When he was twelve, Djokovic left his home to get the most out of his talent and landed at the tennis academy of Nikola Pilic in Munich. In 2003, he made his debut on the professional tour.

A mere two years onwards, he reached the third round of Wimbledon and the US Open, both as a qualifier. Novak Djokovic began climbing up the ATP ranking and soon won his first titles on the ATP Tour, when he triumphed in Metz and Amersfoort. In 2007, he became the first male Serbian tennis player to reach the final of Grand Slam tournament (US Open), but stood no chance against Roger Federer. By the way: before that, he had played the French Open and Wimbledon semi-finals.

Soaring to the Top: Djokovic’s Way to No. 1

For quite a while, Novak Djokovic couldn’t get past the other two huge tennis stars of his generation, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. But this would soon change. At the 2008 Australian Open, he defeated Federer in the semi-final and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final to claim the first Grand Slam title of many to come. By the way: Djokovic became the youngest player to win the Australian Open. And latest by now, everybody knew he was someone to reckon with.

In July 2011, Djokovic made the next big step in his career: he claimed the top spot in the ATP ranking for the first time and surpassed his great rivals Nadal and Federer. On top of that, he won three Grand Slams in just one season. In Melbourne, he defended his title, plus he won Wimbledon and the US Open for the first time in his career. Besides that, “Nole” won an impressive five Masters and remained unbeaten for 43 matches, the third longest winning streak in the open era.

Grand Slam Completed & Numerous Records

The hunger for collecting titles wouldn’t subside in the years to come and he won too many tournaments to name them all. In 2016, Novak Djokovic finally won the French Open to fill that gap in his trophy cabinet and complete the career Grand Slam. The following years, Djokovic had to deal with various injuries that sidelined him and he even dropped out of the top ten for a while. But with his strong willpower, “Nole” always came back stronger and never needed much time to get back to form.

Djokovic won plenty more Grand Slam titles and played many memorable finals that got the audience off their feet. In the longest Wimbledon final in history, he defended two match balls against Roger Federer and converted his own match ball after nearly five hours. By winning the 2020 Australian Open, Djokovic became only the second player to win a Grand Slam title in three different decades. Also, he is the first tennis player to collect more than 100 million US Dollars in prize money.

Staying on Top of the Game: Djokovic Explores new Ways

Novak Djokovic is one of the most versatile players on the ATP tour. His ability to regain the upper hand from seemingly hopeless positions is exceptional. And with his stamina and fitness, he can wear down any opponent. Furthermore, Djokovic works incredibly hard and constantly explores new ways of staying on top of the game, including working with nutritional experts to keep his body in a good condition and be able to compete on the highest level till he is old – for a tennis pro. Being passionate for healthy food, Djokovic published a nutrition guide and owns a restaurant chain. In summer 2014, he married his long-time girlfriend Jelena Ristic. Novak Djokovic and his wife have a couple of children and he regularly offers some insights into his private life on Instagram.
